Choose a Destination

A great way to orient your entire trip is to plan it around a specific destination or group of stopping points. As we mentioned, there’s a lot to see around us. A weekend trip can help you explore new parts of the state or region and extended trips can take you much farther away. Choose some of the spots on your bucket list so you can make some other important decisions.

Plan the Route

First big decision is the route. This means covering a few things. First, decide which routes you’ll want to take to get to your destination. Some people are more comfortable driving on the interstate while others may want the experience of a scenic bypass. And some just want to get there as fast as possible.

Once you’ve got the kinds of roads you’ll want to travel on, decide how long you’ll want to be driving every day and figure out where you’ll want to stop every night. While lots of travelers like to wing it when it comes to how often they’ll be stopping, we don’t advise this in the peak of camping season. You may reach a place and realize there are no available spots, as everyone else is going to be camping, too.

When you’ve got the basics down, consider looking into some attractions you may be passing as you’re traveling and decide if you’ll want to pencil in a stop along the way. It can be a lot of fun to make spontaneous stops, however there are a lot interesting stopping points that won’t be visible from the main road, so a little research ahead of time can help you have a more enjoyable trip.

Make Your Packing List

One of the biggest struggles many people face is knowing what to pack for an RV trip. It’s a little different from what you’d normally pack for a road trip in a car. We recommend taking careful notes about what you use on a day-to-day basis, as these will probably be things you’ll need to include in your rig, like cooking utensils, dishware, and linens. If you’re still struggling to make a good packing list, check out one of the many RV packing list apps available for your phone. These provide blank lists, but they can also generate pre-made lists to help you get started.

Prepare your RV

When you’re sure you and your family are all set to go, you’ll also want to make sure your RV is ready to go. Taking a little time now to inspect the entire rig for any damages or upcoming concerns can be the difference between smooth sailing and a sudden breakdown on the side of the road.

You may also want to get your RV inspected by a professional technician, either to deal with a problem you spot or just to get a once-over before your trip. If this is the case, then contact our service department at Cedar City RV and we’ll help you get one step closer to your next great adventure. We proudly serve Lebanon, Nashville, and Smithville, Tennessee.
